UW Medicine includes Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital and Medical Center, UW Medical Center, Valley Medical Center, UW Neighborhood Clinics, UW Physicians, UW School of Medicine and Airlift Northwest. Of the $326.6 million in gifts and private grants raised in 2012 by the University of Washington, UW Medicine raised $117 million (36 percent of the University’s total) in gifts and private grants from just under 16,000 donors. The University of Washington completed an eight-year campaign in 2008, exceeding the $2 billion campaign goal. In this campaign, UW Medicine was responsible for $1 billion, or 50 percent, of this tot! al. The campaign was designed to advance key priorities of UW ! Medicine and to enable permanent fundraising capacity of $100 million or more annually. UW Medicine currently is making efforts to steward campaign donors, cultivate new major gift donors, build the pipeline of new donors and expand its planned giving program.

UW Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Senior Director for Philanthropy . The Senior Director for Philanthropy will work with the Chief Advancement Officer, Assistant Vice President for Advancement, academic leaders, and volunteers to provide leadership and strategic direction for the major gifts program (including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship) for UW Medicine. The Senior Director will develop annual fundraising plans and manage a comprehensive campaign strategy for potential campaign goal of $250-$350 million, as part of UW Medicine’s comprehensive fundraising campaign. The Senior Director will also be responsible for managing a growing team of major gift o! fficers focused on securing major gifts for priority campaign initiatives. The Senior Director will be expected to work closely with department chairs, academic leaders, faculty, and volunteers.

The Senior Director will have responsibility for oversight and management of fundraising programs in significant priority areas including the Department of Medicine, which is the largest department in the University of Washington School of Medicine, with key initiatives including the division of cardiology, the heart regeneration program, the division of vascular surgery, nephrology, pulmonary and critical care, the diabetes care center, the diabetes and obesity center of excellence, medical genetics and personalized precision medicine.

Developing and implementing major gift fundraising strategies for several key departments and program areas that focus on diverse and complex areas of medicine.

Encouraging department chairs and faculty to actively and prod! uctively participate in the fundraising process; faculty are very busy ! with responsibilities in research, teaching, and clinical care.

Identifying donors with the potential and affinity to make major gifts in each program area; there are no “ready-made” prospective donor pools for assigned areas.

Maintaining a heavy strategic contact schedule (~16 contacts per month) while developing and managing advancement activities. Face-to-face visits with prospective major donors are preferred, unless the donor indicates otherwise.

Developing and preparing 15+ major gift proposals per year for a minimum of $100k with a focus on proposals of $1 million+. Target to secure an average of $2.5 million in gifts each year.

Working collaboratively with diverse constituencies (faculty, staff, patients, community leaders, volunteers) with diverse goals and expectations.

Developing a keen understanding of the assigned areas of medicine and interpreting this complex scientific and medical information for a lay audienc! e.

Coordinating activities within the complex environment of UW and UW Medicine.

Ensuring that all fundraising activities with patients are compliant with state and federal (HIPAA) privacy regulations.

While UW Medicine Advancement is the leading fundraising unit on campus, the level of private gifts must increase if UW Medicine is to remain competitive with its true peers, predominantly private institutions. UW Medicine is responsible for one-third to one-half of the gift revenue that the University of Washington receives annually. The Director for Philanthropy will work with key academic and administrative leaders and business, community, and civic leaders to identify, cultivate, and solicit donors with the capacity of making gifts of $500k+.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Senior Director will supervise a growing team of advancement professionals. The Senior Director will manage the work of volunteers and direct the collabora! tive efforts of faculty and staff colleagues to develop special events,! marketing materials, and donor relations activities to support major and principal gift fundraising.

Train faculty and volunteers on patient fundraising, ensuring that all state and federal (HIPAA) privacy regulations are followed.

As needed, coordinate major gift fundraising activities with UW and UW Medicine colleagues in Gift Planning, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Principal Gifts, Regional Gifts, etc.

Prepare annual operating plan and progress reports as requested. Complete annual performance self-assessment as key component of Annual Review.

Complete other duties as assigned.

Direct Fundraising Responsibilities

Develop a strategic major gifts plan for campaign priorities and assigned departments, divisions, and focus areas within UW Medicine. Work with department chairs, academic leaders, and faculty to develop funding priorities and implement advancement programs needed to sustain major and principal philant! hropic support. Develop a pool of primarily individual, with some joint responsibility for corporate and foundation, major and principal gift prospective donors for each assigned area. Coordinate the participation of department chairs, academic leaders, and faculty in major gift fundraising activities.

Manage a portfolio of 100 to 150 major and principal gift prospective donors with capacity to make gifts of $500,000 or more, including individuals with potential of $1 million or more. Work with faculty and volunteers to identify and qualify new major gift prospective donors, with emphasis on securing faculty referrals of grateful patients. Develop and implement a cultivation and solicitation strategy for each assigned major gift prospective donor. Record and track all activity using the University’s prospect management and tracking system. Prepare written proposals, informational materials, endowment agreements, gift illustrations, and other materials needed to s! ecure major gifts. For each major gift donor managed, develop appropria! te stewardship activities within the context of the overall stewardship plan.

In alignment with University of Washington and UW Medicine Advancement accountability metrics, strive toward the following goals:

Make approximately 100 substantive donor contacts with donors and prospective donors that advance the relationship toward philanthropic commitment.

Develop and present 15+ major gift proposals each year with a target of securing an average of $2.5 million+ in new commitments.

As appropriate, identify, recruit, train, and develop leadership roles for volunteers who assist with major gift fundraising activities. Staff volunteer fundraising partnerships and committees as assigned.

As needed, coordinate major gift fundraising activities with UW Medicine colleagues, and UW colleagues in Gift Planning, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Principal Gifts, Regional Gifts, etc. We place a premium on intra-team collegiality, and assign! ment and donor portfolios frequently overlap. The Director for Philanthropy will demonstrate exceptional communication and collaboration skills.

The Director for Philanthropy is responsible for all campaign planning and major gift fundraising for assigned departments, divisions, and program areas. To achieve goals, the Senior Director for Philanthropy serves as the lead strategist and leads and coordinates the activities of the team and department chairs, academic leaders, faculty, volunteers, and colleagues within UW and UW Medicine.

The Senior Director will supervise a growing team of advancement professionals. The Senior Director will manage the work of volunteers and direct the collaborative efforts of faculty and staff colleagues. The Senior Director for Philanthropy participates in hiring, performance appraisals, promotions/reclassifications, salary adjustments, disciplinary actions, and/or handling complaints/griev! ances.

Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Communication, or related, and six to seven or more years of progressively responsible experience and demonstrated success in institutional advancement, with an emphasis on cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts (100k+). Demonstrated success in developing fundraising strategies and plans that advance key relationships to build lifelong connections to the organization.

Additional Requirements:
Demonstrated success as a charismatic and effective leader with the ability to anticipate, develop and communicate long-term vision, values and strategies that focus and drive the create energy of the organization.

A proven commitment to and extensive knowledge and experience in higher education fundraising, fundraising principals and industry trends. Experience in synthesizing information to! balance the interests of multiple parties and act in a decisive and timely manner. The ability to work with various constituents including the academic community and prominent volunteers to define and articulate the University’s image and priorities.
