Western State Hospital is recruiting for a non-permanent Mental Health Technician 1 position, located in the Psychiatric Treatment and Recovery Center (PTRC), Ward E2, swing shift (2:45 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.) with Monday and Tuesday off.

Western State Hospital is located on 264 acres! on the original site of Fort Steilacoom, amid 100 year old st! ately lined avenues, near the town of Steilacoom and the city of Lakewood.

Duties:
Mental Health Technician 1 (MHT1) in the Psychiatric Treatment and Recovery Center South provides nursing care under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) to patients with psychiatric and physical illness at Western State Hospital, a secure facility. This position models philosophy of care based upon patient strengths. This position actively emulates the Nursing Department values and beliefs of kindness, respect, dignity and recognition of individual differences. Duties include:

Maintain order, discipline and security in housing and treatment areas, protects employees and patients from acts of violence from recalcitrant patients. Provide mentally impaired or emotionally disturbed patients with routine physical, emotional, psychological or rehabilitative care under the direction of nursing and medical staff;
Record and maintain record of patients condition a! nd activity including vital signs, eating habits and behavior and response to therapeutic interventions;
Orient patients to ward routine and environment;
Escort patients to programming, activities and appointments on and off the grounds;
Educate the patient on activities of daily living and encourage participation in social and recreational activities;
Complete ward rounds and patient census. Room by room verification of patient's presence and safety; and
Perform other duties as assigned and participate in in-service educational programs.
Ability to work as a team member and resolve personal conflicts in a calm, non-threatening manner.
Must be able to comprehend communication with management, peers, clients and the public.
Must be able to position, transfer, move and contain potentially assaultive or self harming patients, i.e., provide for patient safety and comfort through attention to general health by performing partial to total assistanc! e for the patient in bathing, dressing, feeding and transferring from b! ed to chair.
Ability to pursue and contain an escape risk.

Qualifications:
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

High school diploma or GED

AND

Registration as a Nursing Assistant Registered (NAR) with the State of Washington.

AND

Current Food Handler's Permit or the ability to obtain one within 14 days of hire.

DESIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Certification as a Nursing Assistant Certified (NAC) with the State of Washington.

Ability to communicate and comprehend through oral and written forms of communication with management, peers, patients, and the public

Employees must comply with health screening requirements by undergoing tuberculosis skin tests and providing documentation of immunity to rubeola (7-day measles) and rubella (German measles) and varicella (Chicken Pox). Immunity may be documented through immunization or serologic immunity. Compliance is a condition of employment.

Criminal background! check clearance, which may include fingerprinting, is required of all employees and applicants.

Employees in this classification are included in a union shop. Employees must comply with all health screening requirements.

Employees in these positions may be required to work overtime and/or holidays. Employees in these positions must be able to participate as an active member of the treatment team for patients who have behavioral, social, and/or medical problems and who may exhibit non-compliant behavior.

DSHS has a restricted smoking policy.
