ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Spatial Analyst conducts quantitative spatial analysis, develops and manages conservation databases, and prov! ides technical support for the conservation priorities of The Nature Conservancy’s Washington chapter. Primary responsibilities include:
Conducting spatial & quantitative analysis
using ESRI GIS software and extensions, quantitative statistics, computational modeling, and diverse data to deliver rapid, cutting edge analysis and mapping that supports quick and innovative scientific responses to terrestrial, freshwater, and marine conservation questions and needs from colleagues and partners across the state.
Promoting data and tool sharing
through partnershipswith academics, government agencies, and other organizations so that Conservancy data and planning tools are accessed and applied by others, and TNC’s Conservation and Science staff makes best use of available data and tools.
Delivering technical services
such as providing timely and satisfactory responses to data and map requests from conservation programs, mana! ging ArcSDE accounts and workflows, maintaining GIS data libra! ry and JungleDisk resources.
Other specific duties may include:
Building, populating and maintaining spatial and other relational data sets from cartographic and tabular source material
Communicating and sharing results of spatial analyses and products that inform Conservancy staff and partners
Providing hardware and software support
Training staff to access data through web-mapping applications and other technologies

Savvy GIS and technology professional
who develops a broad network of professional relationships and who uses m! ultiple technologies such as ESRI enterprise GIS, ArcSDE, ArcGIS extensions (e.g., Spaital Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, 3D Analyst) scripting languages (e.g., Python, SQL, JavaScript, Visual Basic), Model Builder, R, and web publishing, to make workflows more efficient, and to make data, analyses, maps and other information more easily accessible to others.
Constructive problem-solver
who takes initiative to suggest possible solutions to conservation and technical problems, and who collaborates with peers to decide and act on an appropriate course.
Conservation practitioner
who has worked with ecological data and applied it to conservation problems, and is familiar with best available data sources.
Conservation practitioner
who has knowledge of climate change drivers and ability to integrate climate science into all spatial analyses.
The Spatial Analyst will work closely with the Science Director, and with p! eers in the Science and Conservation Programs to ensure that her/his wo! rk, and that of her/his team is strategically aligned with conservation priorities and compatible with enterprise information systems. The Spatial Analyst will report to the chapter’s Science Director. This position is based in Seattle, Washington.

Able to simp! lify and explain complex scientific and/or conservation data to general! audiences.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT
Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
BS degree in relevant field of study and 3 years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience using geographic information systems (GIS) and computer models to develop quantitative spatial analyses related to conservation or natural resources.
Experience populating, managing, and maintaining databases or geographic information systems.
Experience developing, managing and completing multiple projects on time, as part of a team.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
MS or BS degree and certification in conservation, geography, ecology, natural resource man! agement, environmental sciences or related discipline, and 3-5 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience using scripting languages or Model Builder to automate analysis or other GIS processes.
Demonstrated experience with complex spatial analysis and data modeling.
Demonstrated ability to synthesize a variety of available spatial models and select the best model and scale to address a particular question
Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information in a tangible way to non-technical audiences.
Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and region(s), including conservation science and GIS technology.
Demonstrated experience collaborating with other parties to obtain different data sources.
Able to make practical sense out of processed data and apply to real world situations and decisions.
Manages time and diverse acti! vities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
Demon! strated experience operating ArcGIS software, managing relational databases and creating maps.
Demonstrated database and computer based management experience including managing, maintaining and populating databases and manual files.
Proficient at using common software applications (e.g.; Word, Access, Excel, Web browsers).
Communicates clearly via written, spoken, and visual means.
