This job is responsible for performing moderately complex to highly complex and specialized clinical laboratory tests/analyses of human bloo! d, urine and other body fluids, tissues or substances using manual or automated techniques to obtain data for use in the diagnosis, management and treatment of disease/injury. Specific areas of accountability may include one, or a combination of, the following disciplines: transfusion service, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, microbiology, immunology, toxicology and/or urinalysis. Work includes 1) analyzing, interpreting, confirming, documenting and delivering test results; 2) operating and maintaining standard Lab instrumentation and equipment; and 3) using the Laboratory Information System (LIS) in the performance of job duties.
On a shift basis, and in the absence of lab supervisor, lab manager or lab director, an incumbent may be assigned responsibility for serving as a Tech-In-Charge.
Essential Duties:
Operates complex automated analysis equipment and/or laboratory computer system to perform designated tests; sets up and adjusts laborato! ry equipment and apparatus appropriate for the designated test! (s).
Stains and prepares slides of specimen material for microscopic examination and evaluation; prepares chemical solutions and reagents; maintains growth and virulence of cultures; observes reactions and makes/records readings of test results.
Records test data, makes statistical calculations, compares laboratory results with normal values and investigates atypical results to determine cause.
Evaluates and determines validity of test sample value(s) based on testing of quality control materials.
Recognizes and addresses unexpected test reactions, errors and discrepancies.
Utilizes the LIS in the performance job duties, to include: looks up patient information; enters testing data/results.
Develops, tests, documents and implements new test methodologies, including quality control parameters, by evaluating guides or possible alternative approaches to standard methods; recommends updates to the procedure directory ! in the LIS (Laboratory Information System.
Provides consultative services regarding laboratory procedures, test results and examinations to medical staff, laboratory personnel and other healthcare providers.
Keeps abreast of new technical and theoretical procedures, departmental policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's Degree from a regionally-accredited college/university, including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics
AND
successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Medical Technologist program
Experience:
Two years of full-time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Immunohematology, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunology and Clinical Microscopy within the past ten years.
License/Certification:
National registration as Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP),
OR
Clinical Laboratory Scientist by the National Credentialing Agency ! for Lab Personnel (NCA),
OR
certification with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a Clinical laboratory Technologist or Categorical certification by either ASCP or NCA in the discipline for which the candidate is applying (e.g. Immunohematology, Microbiology),
OR
current application accepted by either ASCP or NCA, pending examination. License must be obtained within the first six months of employment.
