Position Description:
Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation's largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. Over the years we have worked very hard to keep Seattle's electricity affordable, reliable, and environmentally sound. Today, City Light is a recognized national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.
This position performs the most complex and difficult technical engineering activities in the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of City Light equipment and services projects.
This incumbent will work under limited supervision; howeve! r, will report to the Supervising Principal in North Distribution Engineering Center.
Job Responsibilities:
This individual will work with the staff in the Distribution Engineering Units, Network Engineering, Streetlights, Joint Use, Transmission, Substations and/or Distribution Planning.
Review proposals for new electrical services, use RevAmps to generate Front Sheets, and determine the type and size of installation for electrical service.
Prepare letters to customers with construction requirements, scope of work, estimates, etc.
Perform complex, detailed pencil, ink or CAD drafting and preparation of maps, plans, revisions, activating the work order numbers, schematics and drawings of the electrical features of distribution systems and services.
Prepare work orders and work instructions, specify construction standards and materials, and estimate hours and costs.
Coordinate distribution system designs and re! lated work required to improve or add to existing facilities.
Supervise field work and visit work sites to check progress, verify compliance with instructions and respond to inquiries and problems from crews and contractors.
Attend pre-construction conferences to determine project schedules and requirements.
Answer questions from departmental personnel concerning transformer and pole load reports, work orders, distribution maps and consultant documents.
Assist and review work of subordinates, and provide training, as required.
Act as interdivisional liaison for coordinating the various phases of designing, planning and preparation of project details.
Serve as project engineer on capital projects and other programs.
Review final plans, specifications, special conditions and agreements, and coordinates the work of electrical contractors, affected public agencies, and City Light crews.
Prepare and administ! er consultant contracts, monitor contract progress and review invoices ! for approval.
Review work submitted by consultants and contractors to make recommendations on its acceptability against scope, budget and schedule.
Interact with inter- and intra-departmental engineering and construction personnel, other government agencies, contractors, consultants and the public to exchange information, coordinate work, answer questions and respond to complaints.
Using AutoCAD, as well as necessary computations, in the preparation of preliminary and final plans, schematics, wire diagrams and drawings of the electrical features of varied facilities such as, substations, transmission and distribution systems, and related electrical systems.
Adhering to safety regulations and practices.
Participates in presentations, special projects and assignments as directed.
Performs other duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
Requires the e! quivalent of four years of electrical engineering office or field experience and either an Associate degree in electrical engineering or two years of college level course work in electrical engineering.
For field assignments, must be able and willing and to work in all types of weather and in or near construction sites where there will be exposure to traffic, hazardous or toxic substances, and high voltage energized equipment. May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends or holidays and during storms.
Certification/License:
Driver's license or equivalent mobility.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering with power option
Four years of experience managing projects related to electric utility distribution engineering design and construction
Analytical engineering such as fault analysis, lead flow and ampacity programs
Comput! er skills such as AutoCAD, Word, Excel, Windows
Ability to wri! te clear, understandable and professional letters, memos and reports
Ability to give presentations to professional staff, management, and government agencies
Knowledge of SCL infrastructure, construction specification and work practices
Familiarity with NERC Reliability and State regulations
Ability to handle shifting and multiple priorities and to work as a team member in a diverse work force;
Willingness to learn and accept responsibility, comply with safety rules and regulations, work efficiently, effectively and independently
Professional Engineer License (WA)
