Motor Vehicle Operator

Location: Vancouver, Washington

Description: Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration is hiring Motor Vehicle Operator right now, this position will be arranged in Washington. For detail informations about this position opportunity please read the description below.

This position exists to transport patients, records and supplies for the VA Portland Health Care System. The individual operates such vehicles as para-transit wheelchair vans, sedans, station wagons, heavy and medium du ty trucks and buses. The trucks operated are up to 32,000 pounds in gross weight and 32 feet in overall length. The buses are rated at 28 adults with 2 mobility aid (wheelchair/power scooter) securement positions. Vehicles operated by this individual may have attachments such as hydraulic lifts and folding ramps.

  • Incumbent operates vehicles in a safe, professional manner
  • Utilizes defensive driving techniques at all times when operating vehicles
  • Uses knowledge of turning radius of large trucks and buses
  • Maneuver large trucks and buses in confined areas that are congested with other vehicular and pedestrian traffic
  • Backs up vehicles to loading docks
  • Utilizes knowledge of braking capacity and accounts for load weights and how they impact stopping distance
  • Identifies alternative routes in emergency situations
  • Regularly communicates with Operations Supervisor and dispatcher, typically through two-way radio
  • Communicates professionally and courteously with customers to include patients and their families

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on th e basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The operator is required to lift heavy objects while loading and unloading cargo. The operator assists patients in and out of vehicles. The position requires prolonged periods of driving, sometimes in times of traffic congestion, and the operator must be constantly alert and aware of his/her surroundings.

Working conditions for this position are hazardous. The operator must drive on steep terrain during periods of inclement weather. Some of the vehicles operated vibrate and jerk. The operator is subjected to the stress of driving for long periods of time in heavy traffic conditions. The position requires them to be exposed to exhaust fumes and loud no ises up to seven hours per day. The operator will also work inside and outside in the elements such as rain, extreme heat, snow and ice.
